Given the current lockdown in Newcastle, the Hunter and surrounds, we will be open for medically necessary procedures only Monday to Friday. Please call the surgery on 4932 8366 for an appointment. We will continue to monitor the situation and will update our operating procedures accordingly.

We are open for all procedures! You can come in for your 6 monthly checkups, scale and clean, fillings, dentures, crowns, etc. We are so excited to see our patients again!

However, if you do have COVID-19 or suspect you might have it, please call us to defer your appointment.

As of 27 April 2020:

Great news – we are now able to see our patients for an extended range of dental work (e.g. fillings and dentures), as well as dental emergencies.

Unfortunately, we still can’t see you for your regular 6 monthly check-ups or very invasive work (e.g. implants).

If you are unsure about whether or not we can see you, please ring us on 02 4932 8366 with any questions.

This is a trying time with lots of uncertainty and we have had lots of questions from our community, such as: Are Rutherford dentists still open? Where is there an emergency dentist in Maitland? Rutherford Dental are proud to still be offering emergency dental appointments for Maitland. Dr Gen is still making sure she can fit in all emergency patients and we will still see you until the government increases the restrictions. We will always comply with all safety standards and you can rest assured that you are safe with us. This is a really good article which explains some of the issues dentists have been having regarding protective equipment. We still have enough masks to keep our patients, staff and dentists safe. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us immediately as things are changing so quickly.

Coronavirus and a shortage of surgical masks means oral surgeons like me can’t operate

As of 30 March 2020:

We have received another update from the ADA and have moved into stage 3 restrictions on our services. We are now able to perform emergency procedures only. We are still committed to Rutherford and Maitland dental care and want to help our patients as best we can.We will still be open during the week but times will be limited.  Please give us a ring as soon as possible if there is anything you would like to discuss. As of 25 March 2020:

We have received an update from our industry body (the Australian Dental Association or the ADA), who has been in direct contact with the Chief Medical Officer of Australia to develop a plan for the dental industry.

We are considered an essential service and will continue to provide health care to the community using a staged approach, in order to maximise the safety of patients and staff. This means that if the COVID-19 virus spreads further we will move through the stages and will be reducing the procedures we can perform. The stage and allowable procedures will be communicated to us by the ADA.

We are currently on stage 2 according to the ADA guidelines – so what does this mean for our patients?

We can perform the following:

• Clinically necessary dental treatment to relieve pain, infection and discomfort.

We cannot perform the following:

• Routine dental treatment that is non-urgent and will not impact on the dental or general health of the patient (e.g. 6 monthly recalls, scale and polish, and bleaching)

We are committed to your safety and will continue with our stringent protocols with regards to infection control and have also put in place additional measures to limit exposure to COVID-19.
