What is a Crown?

A crown is a cap made in a dental laboratory that is shaped to fit your tooth. There are many different reasons crowns may need to be placed, including preventing fracture of a cracked tooth, root canal tooth or to improve appearance. At Rutherford Dental, we take great care in providing you with this dental treatment. To place a crown, the natural tooth is shaped around the outside and an impression is taken. Following this, the crown is made in our Maitland dental laboratory and can be placed in the mouth. Crowns can be placed over natural teeth or implants and once placed, cannot be removed outside of the dental office.

What is a Bridge?

A bridge is an artificial tooth that is attached either to an adjacent crown or tooth. Bridges can be used to fill gaps in your smile or to provide better function when you are missing teeth at the back of the mouth. Bridges usually span gaps of only 1-2 teeth to protect the adjacent tooth or crown from fracture. Bridges can be used between natural teeth or implants and once cemented into placed can only be removed in the dental surgery. At home, you can clean around the bridge like your normal teeth and use floss in the space between the bridge and the gum.

What Are They Made Of?

Crowns and bridges can be made of porcelain, metal, zirconia or a combination of these materials. In nearly all cases, crowns are made either of a metal inner surface and a porcelain outer surface or a single layer of tooth coloured zirconia. These types of crowns look just like your natural teeth so that they’re not noticeable. In a few cases all metal crowns are used, but these are rare and are only ever placed in the back of your mouth.

What is a Veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer placed over the front of your teeth in order to improve the appearance of the teeth. If your teeth are chipped, have crack lines or are discoloured for example, we can help you! A veneer can block the appearance of the natural tooth and help make your smile more even, whiter and attractive. Veneers can be made directly in the mouth or with porcelain in our Maitland dental laboratory.
